Summary: The sky is falling : In the summer of 1940 as the war in Europe begins to intensify, a reluctant ten-year-old Norah and her five-year-old brother Gavin are sent by their parents to safety in Canada where to Norah's dismay they are taken in by the rich Ogilvie family.
Looking at the moon : Norah, an English "war guest" is living with the wealthy Ogilvie family in Toronto. She is about to begin her thirteenth summer and it will be filled with swimming, cottage life and adventures with her "cousins". She has almost forgotten what her family looked like, but a distant Ogilvie cousin arrives who doesn't want to fight any war, even though his family expects it.
The lights go on again : "It has been five years since Norah and Gavin arrived in Canada and now that the war is ending, they will soon be going back to England. Norah is eager to see her parents again, but ten-year-old Gavin barely remembers them. He doesn't want to leave his Canadian family, his two best friends and his dog. Then something happens that forces Gavin to make the most difficult decision of his life".
